-Thrift Badge-

Below are the clauses you will need to complete for the Thrift Badge.

Thrift Badge

Clause 1

1. Having a savings account of at least 3 months’ standing and show that you have added to it regularly from your savings or pocket money.

Clause 2

2. Bring a certificate from your parents stating that you are not wasteful in the home and is keeping your belongings in good condition.

Clause 3

3. Keep a notebook over a period of at least a month of ways in which you are able to put thrift into practice.

The Saving Account template for Clause 1 has been sent to your Gmails.

You will have to complete all the clauses and hand it in on 23 October 2015, Friday.

-Reader’s Badge-

Below are the clauses you will have to complete for Reader’s Badge.

Clause 1

1.1 Read a book in any language, written by one of the Eastern authors. {School assigned holiday Chinese books} (Guides need not do this, as it is done at school level)

1.2 Read a storybook written by one of the Western authors. Short synopsis/reflection to be written on chosen book (Guides need not do this, as it is done at school level)

1.3 Read at least 2 books related to Scouting/Guiding

a) “History of Girl Guides Singapore – Milestones & Achievements”

Clause 2

Read books with different headings (4 out of 6) out of the following:

2.1 Science/nature

2.2 Travel/exploration

2.3 A foreign country

2.4 History

2.5 Biography

2.6 A book of poems

Introduce & share the books read through presentation or comic strip or story board or an A4 size poster to the rest of the (combined) patrol members.

Clause 3

Show how to use a book of reference and the index of a book. (Guides need not do this, as it is done at school level)

Clause 4

4.1 Read aloud a passage of her own choice from a sacred book. E.g. Bible, Buddhist passages.

4.2 Read aloud a passage chosen by the tester. {School oral examinations} (Guides need not do this, as it is done at school level)

As for the template for the short synopsis and reflections, it has been sent to your Gmails. Download the document and type/ write your reflections/ sypnosis into it. Both reflections should be typed/ written out separately and they should be printed out for submission.

For Clause 1, (excluding Clause 1.1) the deadline for the reflections and synopsis for both books is on 12 August 2015, Wednesday.

For Clauses 2 and 4, (excluding Clause 4.2) the deadline will be on 12 August 2015, Wednesday, where you will be sharing within your patrol through verbal presentation.

Regarding Clause 4, please do not select a mere sentence to read out, and you should offer some thoughts on your own interpretation and feelings of the excerpt you have chosen.

-Hostess Badge-

Below are the clauses for the Hostess Badge

Clause 1

Entertain the tester, or someone chosen by her, e.g. at morning coffee, afternoon tea, a party, or a suitable Guide event.

*Marks will be awarded as follows:

•Whether the menu served is appropriate (Guides just need to bring ONE food item suitable for the theme afternoon tea)

•Entertainment factor of the host – greetings, making the guests feel welcome, able to strike conversation with ease with the guests etc

•Body language – etiquette in serving the guests, offering food & drinks etc

•Theme-related table lay out

Clause 2

Know, and where possible demonstrate, the chief things to remember when entertaining a guest or guests:

2.1 Coming to stay, e.g. Preparation of room, laying of table etc.

2.2 Coming for a party or similar function. E.g. Invitations, introductions, arrangement of rooms, refreshments, washroom arrangements.

Clause 3

Write letters:

3.1 Inviting to a party or similar event; [your tea party]

3.2 Inviting a friend to stay;(Not required)

3.3 Accepting an invitation, Refusing an invitation (to be formal).

3.4 Thanking after a visit.(Not required)

You will have to write only clauses 3.1 and 3.3, which is to invite your friend to your tea party, and also to refuse an invitation through a written letter.

~Inviting to a party or similar event~

* Marks will be awarded as follows:

- creativity & attractiveness of card (according to theme)

- content of card is relevant & detailed (time, venue, dress code etc)

- language use is appropriate & relevant to the mode of guests.

~Refusing an invitation through a letter~

* Marks will be awarded as follows:

- format of letter

- content of letter is relevant

- use of language appropriate

Do note that you have to bring your own items and materials for this badge on the test day. Try not to borrow another guide's materials as it will affect points for originality. Since you are to do an afternoon tea party, you would need a real tea set, cutlery, decorations and ONE FOODSTUFF.

Be mindful of the overall table layout, etiquette and your theme for the afternoon tea party as it will affect your scores for Hostess' badge.

Remember to submit your invitation cards and letters of refusal on the day itself as well. The Sec 3s and the Guiders will be judging your tea party on the test day so be prepared!

The test day for the Hostess Badge will be on 2 September 2015, Wednesday.
